Duncan is a passionate leader whose drive for technical theatre has inspired many students he has mentored over the years. He has made a point to share the knowledge he has acquired to enrich students’ technical knowledge in a way that will have long lasting impacts. Duncan makes collections of well organized records and other resources for current and future students to refer to when working on theatre productions. These have been vital after the loss of student technical knowledge due to COVID. He is exceptionally patient with everyone he works with and enhances the passion and creativity in every theatre project that he leads.
Duncan has become an indispensable presence and mentor in the Queen’s theatre community. His passion for his craft shows in the way he speaks about his work and his initiative to teach others what he knows. He taught me so many aspects of technical production in an accessible way, enforcing my confidence and inspiring me to continue improving my skills. The enthusiasm he brings to his work creates a learning environment where everyone is eager to absorb the wealth of knowledge he imparts. Duncan’s expertise, passion, and dedication make him an invaluable asset and anyone who can learn from him should consider themselves lucky.
Duncan is an exceptional teacher and leader in the world of theatre tech. Duncan's passion and expertise in this field are unparalleled, and his dedication to educating and mentoring students has made him a huge positive force in the Queen’s and Kingston theatre communities. Duncan has taught me and dozens of other Queen’s students so much about the technical aspects of theatre production, from lighting and sound design to set construction and technical direction. His ability to break down complex concepts into manageable steps has been invaluable in helping me grow as a theatre artist.
Duncan is a patient teacher who consistently encourages students to reach their full potential. He has spent countless hours contributing to the production and technical aspects of The DAN School of Drama and Music, and the department is undoubtedly better for it. Duncan’s guidance and support has been instrumental to my learning at Queen’s, contributing not only to my knowledge and skills in technical production, but also my passion for it.
Having worked with Duncan on several productions, both professionally and academically, it is with confidence that I can say he has an eagerness to help everyone succeed and achieve their best. Duncan’s knowledge, patience, and kindness has helped me develop my technical and design skills at a rate that I don’t believe would have been possible otherwise.
Duncan is not only highly knowledgeable in his profession, but also skilled in making his expertise accessible to others. As a novice lighting designer, I had no prior experience, but Duncan patiently guided me through the entire design process. Furthermore, despite English not being my first language, Duncan always found ways to simplify complex and abstract concepts using language that was easy for me to understand.
When I started working with Duncan I had zero experience with theatre tech. He was an amazing mentor to me. He is extremely knowledgeable, patient and passionate when it comes to teaching others. If you get a chance to work with or learn from Duncan you are in good hands.
